After Coverfly introduced her, Candace signed with a literary manager at Range.

You previously had a career in journalism. What drew you to transition to screenwriting?

Before becoming a screenwriter I was a reporter at the New York Times and, prior to that, the Wall Street Journal. But I transitioned to screenwriting because I love how screenwriters get to tell fictional stories with so much emotional truth for TV and film. And I love building complex characters who grow and change over many episodes and seasons. It's so much fun.

What has been the biggest obstacle you've encountered so far in your screenwriting career?

Getting used to the gig-work nature of TV writing was an adjustment. And the changing nature of this business, now in a period of contraction, isn't ideal for writers. That said, I'm coming from another super-competitive industry. (When I became a journalist, newspapers were "dying," with fewer jobs than ever.) So I guess I love a challenge.

How has Coverfly helped you on your screenwriting journey?

Coverfly was super helpful in connecting me with a manager. They did a great job "match-making" by sending my work to folks who they thought would connect with it. When I was starting out, I also used the Coverfly platform to apply to a few contests that helped me gain a little traction. 

If you could give your younger self advice at the beginning of your screenwriting pursuit based on where you are now, what would it be?

Figure out what your personal brand is and come prepared with an anecdote that exemplifies that when you meet people. Never stop rewriting. Focus on getting better at the work every single day.
